Master of Arts in Sociology

Introduction

Saraswati Multiple Campus, Department of Sociology has been offering MA in Sociology since 2010 in the evening shift. In a decade long journey, MA Sociology program is one of the popular programs in the campus with good result and academic environment. As approved by Tribhuvan University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the MA Sociology course offers altogether 18 papers and a compulsory thesis in fourth semester. Out of them there are 12 compulsory papers from first to fourth semester. The student may opt for three optional courses in the third and one in the fourth semester.

Course Objectives

The objective of these courses is to impart up-to-date knowledge of the theories and methods of sociology to the students along with training in field-work and secondary data analysis. The second objective is to provide skilled human resource for Nepal development needs. The third objective is to inculcate in the students the spirit of human rights and social justice. Thus, the overall objective is to develop professional skill, in both theory and research, in sociology in the students of this discipline at a par with those of other countries.

Admission Requirements

A student holding a Bachelor degree in any of the following subjects recognized by Tribhuvan University is considered eligible to apply for admission.

  • Sociology; Anthropology; Social Work; Nepalese History, Culture and Archaeology; Psychology; history; Home Science; Geography; Economics; and Political Science
  • Any discipline from faculty of education, management and law
  • Any discipline from institute of medicine, engineering, forestry, agriculture and animal science

An applicant seeking admission to M.A. Sociology must appear in an Entrance Examination of one hour’s duration conducted by the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tribhuvan University. The applicant who fails to appear in the Entrance Examination or to obtain a minimum qualifying score will not be given admission.

Duration of the Course and Examinations

The duration of the course is of two years with four semesters. There is a university examination, in each six months, at the end of each semester. Eighty percent of the attendance in the class is compulsory.

** This course may require additional teaching faculty and teaching hours as per the number of group of students formed for the purpose of group work in theory class and computer practice for practical class.

Evaluation

Evaluation will be on the basis of 40 percent internal and 60 percent external. Forty percent internal evaluation will be done by the department/faculty on the basis of the following criteria:

  1. Class attendance 10 marks
  2. Class participation, discussion and presentation with précis 10 marks
  3. Term paper writing 10 marks
  4. Class test (writing) 10 marks

The 60 percent external evaluation will be done by the Dean’s office on the basis of final written examination. However, in case of practical courses 60 percent external will also be done practically in computer lab.

Shushila Sherchan is the Head of the Department of Sociology at Saraswati Multiple Campus. Her email is shushilasherchan69@gmail.com.

Tek Nath Subedi is Co-Ordinator of MA Sociology at Saraswati Multiple Campus. He teaches major sociological theories including Structure Functionalism, Marxist perspectives and World System Perspectives. His email is tngsubedi@gmail.com.

Laxmi Thapa is a Assistant Professor of Sociology and former coordinator of Master Program in Sociology at Saraswati Multple Campus. Her email is laxmithapa457@gmail.com.

Janak Paudel is Assistant Lecturer of Sociology at Saraswati Multiple Campus. He teaches Basic Statistics in Sociological Research; and Survey Research and Computer Data Analysis. His email is paudeljanak420@gmail.com.

Jhakendra Gharti Magar is a teaching faculty of Sociology at Saraswati Multiple Campus since 2010. He has received MPhil in Sociology from Tribhuvan University and currently he is Head of the Sociology Department and Coordinator of the Master Program in the Campus. He teaches MA Sociology courses including Introduction to Sociology, Political Sociology, and Identity, Inequality and Intersectionality. He is a co-author of Majhi Jatiko Chinari (Ethnographic Profile of Majhi Peoples, 2011) and a co-editor of a book ‘Magar Jati: Eatihasik, Sanskritik and Rajnitik Sandarva (Magar Community: A Historical, Cultural and Political Context, 2014)’. He has published various articles in books and journals to his credit. Badri Paudel is a PhD Scholar at Mewar University, India with the specialization in Musahar community of Nepal. He has been teaching Sociology at Saraswati Multiple Campus since 2010 as a teaching faculty. Particularly, he teaches Theories of Social Change and Development and Practice of Social Change and Development in Asia. His major research and publications include ‘Participation of Disadvantage Groups in Rural Development’, ‘Socio-economic and Cultural Study of the Musahar Community’. Nabin Acharya has been teaching faculty of Sociology at Saraswati Multiple Campus since 2017. He received his M. Phil. Degree in Sociology from Tribhuvan University. He has been involved in research and writing in the areas of sociology of education, sociology of development, political and economic sociology. His articles include Parental Involvement and School Performance: A Sociological Perspective, Socio-educational Issues of Urban Public Schools and of the Slums in Kathmandu, Federalism for Nepal, Socio-Structural Causes of Disaster Vulnerability in Nepal which have been published in different Journals and books. Bhim Raj Sigdel is a teaching faculty of Sociology at Saraswati Multiple Campus since 2017. He has completed MA in Sociology from Tribhuvan University. He teaches Master level courses including Research methods in sociology, Functional Perspective, Gender studies, and Sociology of Health.  He has published article on ‘practice of Junk food consumption among educated people: A sociological study of governmental job holders-2020’ and ‘obstruction in the Mobility of City People: A study on vehicle handling practices of Kathmandu-2021’. Narayani Devkota is a teaching faculty of sociology at Saraswati Multiple Campus, Tribhuvan University. She teaches Caste and Class, Marxist perspectives, and Identity, Inequality and Intersectionality. Currently, she is pursuing M.Phil in Sociology from Tribhuvan University. Her research works includes sociology of urbanization, disaster and gender. She has edited two series, Anthologies of women struggle named Sankalpa, one of, 35 women human right defender and 51 Female Chair and Vice chair of local level government. Occasionally, she writes on contemporary social issues in Kantipur Daily. Her email: nara.nepal@gmail.com.

Ram Gurung is a teaching faculty of Sociology and teaches sociological theories and research. Gurung is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Sociology from the Tribhuvan University. He works in public policy issues with the aim to influence policy makers and facilitate in public policy formation, change, and continuation process. His major research interest areas include macro level social-economic-political change, urbanization, and disaster management. Research and Publication

The department is going to publish an annual journal of Nepali society from this year. Please see the call for papers. In addition, the faculty members are engaged in various research projects as their area of interest and they have been publishing journal articles, book chapters, and op-ed articles on contemporary social issues.
